Putting your goals in writing can be a powerful suggestion to the subconscious mind. When you write them in your own handwriting, you stimulate 3 modalities: touch, sight, and sound. By going through the motion of writing your goals, you feel yourself writing them, you see them written on the page, and you hear the words in your mind. The more carefully the goals are written, the more benefits you receive.
A study was done at Harvard University involving students who wrote their goals. During one year, only 3% of the student population write down their goals. Thirty (30) years later, the students who actually wrote their goals down earned more money than remaining 97% student population combined. That’s how powerful writing your goals can be.
If you’re interested in having similar results, then follow these simple instructions. There are 4 P’s involved in writing successful goals:
- Personal: These goals are about YOU, so what’s the most personal word you know? When you leave out WHO these goals are about, your subconscious will have a way of getting out of it. Your subconscious might react with, “well, you didn’t say that it was about me!”
- Present Tense: By using words like “will”, “want”, “wish”, “hope”, and “going to” (etc), you push the goal further and further away from you. Either write them as if the goal is being achieved today, or set a specific time when the goal will be achieved.
- Positive: Write what you WANT! The subconscious mind ignores the word “not” and focuses on the commanding words, action words, or descriptives. Find the action words in this sentence: I don’t want to be fat. (“be fat” is the commanding, or action word). Instead, use affirmations like, “I am slender”, “I am at a healthy body weight”, or “I weigh 120 lbs”, etc.
- Precise: If you write down that you want to lose weight, and you lose 2 pounds, you have met your goal. Congratulations!! But is that what you really wanted? If not, then precision is your answer. The following joke is an example of how important precision can be.
A man is walking down the beach and comes across an old bottle. he picks it up, pulls out the cork, and out pops a genie.
“Thank you for freeing me from the bottle,” the genie says. “In return, I will grant you three wishes.”
“Great!”, says the man. “I always dreamed of this, and I know exactly what I want. First, I want $1,000,000,000 in a Swiss bank account.” Poof! There is a flash of light, and a piece of paper with account numbers in his hand.
“Next,” he continues, “I want a brand new red Ferrari.” Poof! A bright red Ferrari appears next to him.
“Finally,” he says, “I want to be irresistible to women.” Poof! he turns into a box of chocolates.
The genie is like your subconscious mind, so state what you want precisely.
Very interesting information, Mistress Amethyst! The power of the mind and willpower never cease to amaze me………even more so when it is given over so willingly.
Thank You for the great advice! Starting now, i am a great listener.
